Mediator Release Testing, MRT®, is a functional measurement of immunological pathways activated by food and food chemicals in the diet. It measures the inflammatory response and subtle changes in our immune cells (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, and eosinophils) as they release chemical mediators (a substance released from cells, e.g., cytokines, histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, etc.), that regulate or cause physiologic consequences during an immune response to an antigen. It’s the release of these chemical mediators that leads to the negative clinical effects a person with a food sensitivity experiences.
The measurement of these chemical mediators is obtained after a food or food-chemical exposure and calculates these changes as either “non-reactive,” “moderately-reactive,” or “reactive,” based on the level of inflammation induced from the exposure. The immune mediator release, which brings about inflammation, is the key event that leads to negative symptoms.
Millions of Americans suffer from food sensitivities that can contribute to inflammation, pain and various symptoms that can drastically reduce their quality of life. Without question, food sensitivities and allergic reactions to foods and food chemicals are on the rise making diagnostic testing an important way to identify adverse immunological responses to various foods and chemicals. Traditional medical tests are often not able to identify sensitivities and only look for full blown allergic (IgE) responses.

It can take time for our immune system to respond and we may not feel the effects of a reactive food for up to 72 hours after ingestion. The fact that a person may not feel symptoms for hours, or even days, after ingestion, makes it more difficult for a connection to be made (e.g., a headache felt today and the pizza eaten two days ago). A specific food can elicit a very different response for each individual. A strawberry can cause a skin breakout for one person and not another. Any person can develop a sensitivity to any food, even foods considered to be nourishing and healthy.
Sometimes a “reactive” food (e.g., dairy) can be easy to identify. Unfortunately, a chemical like solanine, found in nightshades like tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant and even spices, may not be so easy to pinpoint.
The MRT® 170 panel consists of 141 foods and 29 chemicals commonly found in the American diet. The single factor that all food sensitivities and all food-induced immune reactions have in common is the proinflammatory and proalgesic (related to or causing pain) mediator release from white cells. MRT® aims to measure the levels of inflammation. Additionally, there are seven different possible types of immune reactions to foods; meaning that a problematic food or food chemical can activate the immune system in one of seven different ways.
