SYMPTOMS
One of the most common allergic conditions is hay fever, which is also known as allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis appears in two different forms:
Seasonal: Symptoms occur in spring, summer and early fall. They are usually caused by allergic sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses or weeds, or to airborne mold spores.
Perennial: Symptoms occur all year-round. Perennial allergic rhinitis is generally caused by sensitivity to house dust mites, animal dander, cockroaches and/or mold spores.
Common symptoms of allergic rhinitis include:
• Runny Nose
• Itchy palate, nose, eyes, throat and/or skin
• Red irritated eyes
• Puffy, swollen eyelids
• Sneezing
• Coughing
• Wheezing and shortness of breath
• Contact sensitivity on the skin causing eczema
PREVALENCE
Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost of more than $18 billion. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. Global sensitization rates to one or more common allergens among school children are currently approaching 40%-50%. Individuals diagnosed with hay fever in the last 12 months: 20 million.
